A terrifying attack unfolded just a block from the White House when a gunman appeared to ambush two National Guard troops, reportedly firing three shots at them in a chaotic exchange that left both soldiers in critical condition.

Video captured the moment the suspect approached the troops before opening fire, CNN reporter Evan Perez said. The footage offers a stark look at how quickly a normal day near the nation’s most secure building turned deadly.

The two troops were seriously injured—reports indicate at least one was shot in the head and one had to be airlifted. Conflicting reports about their status have emerged. West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey initially announced their deaths on X but later walked back that statement.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, remains alive. He appeared to have been injured either after one of the troops returned fire or when glass from a nearby bus stop area shattered.

Law enforcement agencies, including D.C. Police, the FBI, and the Secret Service, are actively investigating the incident. The scene, just blocks from the White House, underscores the precarious reality that even the nation’s most fortified areas are not immune to sudden acts of violence.
