A tense scene unfolded near the White House on Wednesday as gunfire erupted just one block away, involving at least two National Guard members, according to reports.
At least one member was struck, prompting an immediate lockdown of the White House, the Secret Service told MS NOW. The conditions of the National Guard members have not been confirmed.
CNN reported that multiple people were injured and that at least one suspect was taken into custody. The shooting reportedly occurred in Farragut Square, a public park near K Street NW in downtown Washington, D.C., and authorities are actively investigating the circumstances.
“The White House is aware and actively monitoring this tragic situation. The President has been briefed,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement Wednesday.
The White House remained on lockdown during the investigation. CNN noted that the incident took place roughly a block from the President’s residence.
Officials have not confirmed whether the shooting was a deliberate attack. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to piece together exactly what happened.
President Donald Trump was in Florida at the time, where he planned to celebrate Thanksgiving.
