When news broke that Nancy Pelosi was retiring from Congress, there was one person everyone knew would have something to say about it — and sure enough, President Donald Trump did not disappoint.
“I think she’s an evil woman. I’m glad she’s retiring. I think she did the country a great service by retiring,” Trump told reporters Thursday from the Oval Office. No pleasantries. No attempts at statesmanship. Just Trump being Trump.
Pelosi, 85, announced earlier that day she won’t seek reelection after serving in Congress since 1987 — a run that included becoming the first and only woman to hold the Speaker’s gavel. But if anyone thought Trump might offer even a begrudging nod to her long career, they clearly haven’t been paying attention for the past eight years.
“I think she was a tremendous liability for the country,” Trump continued. “I thought she was an evil woman who did a poor job who cost the country a lot in damages and in reputation. I thought she was terrible.”
That’s about as on-brand as it gets.
Trump and Pelosi’s mutual disdain is the stuff of political legend. She tore up his State of the Union speech on live TV. He refused to shake her hand. She led two impeachments against him — first in 2019 over Ukraine, then again after January 6th. If there was ever a rivalry that defined modern Washington, this was it.
Pelosi, for her part, hasn’t exactly been holding back either. She recently called Trump the “worst thing on the face of the Earth,” and Trump, as always, has fired back — mocking her repeatedly with his favorite nickname, “Crazy Nancy,” and even making light of the brutal 2022 attack on her husband, Paul Pelosi.
So when Pelosi finally announced her exit, Trump’s reaction wasn’t a surprise. It was predictable, maybe even inevitable — the final jab in a long, ugly feud that’s been running since 2016.
No one expected grace from Trump on this one. And true to form, he didn’t deliver any.
