A National Guard truck slammed into a civilian car early Wednesday morning in Washington, D.C., leaving the driver trapped and needing to be cut out with the jaws of life.
The crash happened around 6:15 AM at the intersection of 8th Street and North Carolina Avenue SE, according to D.C. Fire and EMS.
Witnesses said the collision was part of a military convoy.
“A cop car with sirens followed by 3-4 large military vehicles were heading north,” one person told PoPville. “From my viewpoint, this was clearly not an intentional stopping/crashing of a vehicle.”
Photos and videos posted online show heavy emergency response. Firefighters had to use the jaws of life to pull the driver from the wreckage. Another witness on Reddit confirmed, “the jaws of life were used.”
The National Guard vehicles were reportedly in the area as part of President Donald Trump’s crime crackdown in the city, according to WUSA9.
But some residents are pushing back.
“[H]aving military equipment on civilian streets is inherently dangerous to city residents,” one person wrote on Reddit.
