Chuck Todd just called out Donald Trump for praising him without actually understanding what he said.
On The Chuck ToddCast, the former Meet the Press host responded to a Truth Social post in which Trump weirdly congratulated him for calling him the most “impactful” president since FDR. Trump seemed to think Todd was finally on his side.
“Wow, thank you Chuck,” Trump posted. “I always said that you were far better than the scum that runs the FAKE NEWS at NBC… You are a Free Man now. Congratulations – Use your time well!”
But Todd wasn’t flattered. He said Trump clearly didn’t watch the interview and completely missed what he was trying to say.
“It was not necessarily a compliment,” Todd said. “It was just, in this case, a neutral observation.”
He explained that his FDR comparison wasn’t about praising Trump — it was about acknowledging Trump’s lasting impact, for better or worse.
“There’s no mistaking, he’s not an asterisk in American history,” Todd said. “He is leaving his imprint… and it’s gonna be a generational impact, at least on the Republican Party and perhaps on the nation.”
Todd also reminded listeners that he and Trump have had a rocky relationship for years — dating back to 2011 when Todd said a Trump endorsement would hurt Mitt Romney. Trump later started calling him “Sleepy Eyes Chuck Todd.”
Todd said the whole situation shows how deeply divided the media world has become.
“There is this… we know we’re fragmented,” he said. “But the question is: how thick are those bubbles?”
He added, “I’m constantly worried that I don’t see everything… what do I know about the democratic socialists, what’s in that space? What do I know about what’s happening in MAGA world?”
In short, Todd wasn’t handing out praise — he was sounding the alarm. And Trump missed it completely.
