President Trump’s support is crumbling. A new Economist/YouGov poll shows 55% of Americans now disapprove of the way he’s handling his job — the highest disapproval rating of his second term. Just 41% approve of his performance.
This is Trump’s worst showing since he began his second term in January. That month, he had a 49% approval rating and a 43% disapproval. The numbers have steadily shifted against him.
Disapproval has climbed for three weeks straight: Two weeks ago, it was 53%. Last week, still 53%. Now, it’s jumped to 55%.
His numbers are especially bad with Democrats and independents.
In January, 12% of Democrats said they approved of Trump. Now, that number is down to 3%, the poll shows.
Independents are also turning away. Right after Trump took office this term, 41% of independents approved of his job performance. That’s now dropped to just 29%.
Republicans overall remain loyal. His approval among GOP voters has dipped only slightly — from 94% at the start of the term to 92% now.
But even within the Republican Party, the divide is clear.
The poll separates Republicans into two groups: MAGA supporters and non-MAGA conservatives. Among MAGA Republicans, support for Trump remains rock-solid at 98%.
Among Republicans who don’t identify with the MAGA movement, it’s a different story. They started the term with 90% support for Trump. That number fell to 70% by mid-April.
The poll surveyed 1,680 U.S. adults between July 11 and 14. The margin of error is 3.4 percentage points.
