Donald Trump sparked fresh concerns about his mental fitness during a recent rally in North Carolina, where he seemed to confuse his location. While addressing supporters in Kinston, he mistakenly praised David McCormick as “one of the best [Republicans] of all right here.” The only problem? McCormick is actually running for Senate in Pennsylvania.
“We have great Republicans running and you have one of the best of all right here, David McCormick, you know that?” Trump said. “Where’s David, is he around some place? You know he just left, he’s a great guy.”
This gaffe is just the latest in a series of questionable moments from Trump on the campaign trail, raising eyebrows about his grasp on reality. Just days earlier, at a Wisconsin rally, he drew attention for what many interpreted as an inappropriate gesture while struggling with a microphone stand.
Frustrated by technical difficulties, Trump said: “I came in today, I said, and, you know, this is after four of these things I’ve been in all fairness. I mean, I’m a human being, right? I come in, and here’s the problem.”
The former president then appeared to emulate performing a “sex act” by making a crude hand gestures with his hand and mouth before saying: “Way too low.”
As Trump campaigns in North Carolina, polls indicate troubling trends for him. A recent New York Times/Siena College survey shows Kamala Harris overtaking him in critical swing states, including North Carolina, where she leads by 2 points. In Wisconsin, she edges ahead 49 to 47, and in Georgia, she’s just one point ahead. Trump currently only leads in Arizona, where he holds 49 percent to Harris’s 45 percent.
With Election Day looming, these recurring gaffes and troubling moments have left many questioning not just Trump’s campaign strategy, but his overall mental fitness to lead.
