Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Saturday fired back at President Trump after the president fired off a tweet endorsing his rival in the Alabama Senate runoff, calling Sessions “a disaster.”
In his tweet, Trump called for Alabamans to vote for Tommy Tuberville, calling the former coach a “winner” and Sessions a “disaster who has let us all down.”
Sessions responded with a tweet of his own, saying: “I’ve taken the road less travelled. Not sought fame or fortune. My honor and integrity are far more important than these juvenile insults. Your scandal ridden candidate is too cowardly to debate. As you know, Alabama does not take orders from Washington.”
Trump has repeatedly attacked Sessions for his decision to recuse himself from the Justice Department’s investigation into Russian election meddling, a move that the president and his allies claim led to the appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller.
Sessions has defended himself, saying that he was forced to recuse himself due to his involvement in Trump’s 2016 campaign and that he remains a loyal supporter of the White House’s agenda.
“Look, I know your anger, but recusal was required by law. I did my duty & you’re damn fortunate I did. It protected the rule of law & resulted in your exoneration. Your personal feelings don’t dictate who Alabama picks as their senator, the people of Alabama do,” Sessions said in May.
